The read/write aperture is a small hole in the protective shell. It allows the |read/write head| of the |floppy drive| to access the recording media. In the 3 1/2" microfloppy diskette, the aperture is covered by a metal shutter which protects the disk within it. As the diskette is inserted into the drive, the shutter slides to one side, revealing the aperture.
